Online Gamblers Face Credit Card Payment Problems
February 19,  2010
A move by top credit card payment processors, MasterCard and Visa to change the status quo regarding the use of their services for online gambling has left the industry confused about the future of payment options available to US players.

The two credit card brands have been making moves to curb the use of their cards at online casino and poker sites, as the new date for the implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act comes around in four months time – June 2010. While online gambling is not an illegal act in the United States, the UIGEA essentially calls for payment processors and banks to disallow the transfer of funds to and from offshore gambling sites.

The most publicized credit card payment ban thus far has been MasterCard, whose crackdown was felt almost instantly at online poker and casino sites. Within a few days, top sites such as Doyles Room and Bodog were forced to stop offering MasterCard as a payment option to dedicated US players.

Visa, in the meantime, has kept a lower profile and analysts are divided regarding whether this credit card giant will follow in MasterCard’s footsteps, or whether it is ‘all systems go’ for the group. Some players have reported that they are having more trouble than usual paying with Visa, while others have said that they have reported nothing unusual when trying to pay with their credit cards. Sites such as Compatible Poker, for example, have stated that paying by Visa is still possible, although it is not clear for how long this will be.

Analysts say that MasterCard has been trying for some time now to make changes to its policy regarding online gambling payments, however only now has it managed to ‘crack the code’. Online gambling sites that change MasterCard codes to hide their gambling activities will now be rejected by the company, and Visa may follow suit.

In the meantime, US players are keeping cool about the entire process. These players have been toughened by the results of the UIGEA and have therefore become savvy in the area known as online gambling payment options. Most players are aware of the alternative methods available to them and are either using them to supplement or as an alternative to their credit cards.
